COMMERCE, Ga. – Mike Ashley will sleep well Friday evening thanks to a solid qualifying performance during the first day of qualifying at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga. The mortgage banker from Melville, New York drove his Gotham City Racing 1968 Camaro to the fourth quickest run with a 6.031 elapsed time at 240.51 miles per hour.
Ashley’s strongest run came during the first session. He failed to improve during his evening opportunity.
“We made some unique changes to this car after the last race and the car seems to be responding well,” Ashley said. “The second run, we had some engine breakage. We were looking to run a big number tonight.”
Even though the evening session failed to measure up to standards, Ashley is excited about the potential it offers.
“The car is acting the way we want it to act,” Ashley said. “The chassis is behaving well so we are happy with that. That will give us the opportunity to get after the tune-up more.”
Saturday’s final qualifying session could provide the true measure of what the car is capable of on Sunday.
“We know we are in the field, so we can go out and play with the combination a little bit,” Ashley added. “We’re going to try some new things out.”
Ashley’s not limiting his action to the track, either. He’s scheduled a media conference in the media center at 2 PM, EST on Saturday.
“We’ve got some big announcements,” Ashley added. “Stay tuned.
