NORWALK, Ohio (June 30) - Mike Ashley, driver of the Torco Race Fuels, Inc. Dodge Charger R/T, set a track speed record en route to the No. 8 qualifying position in the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. Ashley's Friday-night run of 4.778/329.58 gives him lane choice tomorrow when he faces off against Jim Head in the first round of eliminations.
"Once again, it was the Friday night session that was the most important, and we were fortunate to make a good lap to get solidly into the show. Today was a good day for us because we were able to work on our Sunday tune up and not have to worry about qualifying," Ashley said.
On his first attempt of the day, Ashley ran well until just before the finish line when fire came from the bottom of the car and he slowed to a 4.994/294.56. His final qualifier went up in smoke just after 150 feet, netting a forgettable 10.100/79.31.
"Before this weekend, Brian [Corradi, crew chief], Mark [Oswald], Steve [Boggs] and I sat and went over everything we'd tried in the past two events, and found what had changed - and then went back to what had been working so well. Obviously, the changes worked, because we set another track speed record and are qualified in the top-half of the field going into Sunday.
"Now, we just continue to work our plan, which is to run each round one at a time, and put everything we have into getting down the track ahead of the guy in the other lane," Ashley said.
Eliminations are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Sunday July 1.
