BRAINERD, Minn. (August 8, 2007) - Fresh off a win at last weekend's IHRA race in Martin, Mich. and on the heels of two No. 1 qualifying performances two weeks in a row in two different sanctioning bodies, Mike Ashley, driver of the Torco Race Fuels Dodge Charger R/T nitro Funny Car is anxious to clinch his spot in the top eight of the Countdown to the Championship this weekend at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minn.
Ashley is currently ranked third in POWERade championship points, and although his position is strong, he knows every round of competition is important.
"At the beginning of the season, we had a team meeting, and we talked about the determination it would take to win a championship. We had compelling reasons -- we wanted to win - and we have stayed focused on that goal," Ashley said.
"Over the past several weeks, we have gone through some really incredibly strenuous and trying times - testing our stamina and motivation, but I have to say that this team has passed the test, and as far as I'm concerned, I give my guys an A+! When we could have taken a week of to rest after six weeks straight on the road, we went to the Torco race in Martin, Michigan, set a track ET record and won the race.
"Now, that's determination," he said. "I am so proud of Brian [Corradi, crew chief] and all of these guys. They are the very best."
Ashley and Team Gotham race next at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minn. this weekend, August 10-12. Qualifying is scheduled for 3:30 and 6:15 p.m. Friday, August 10, and noon and 2:45 p.m. Saturday, August 11. Eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday, August 12.
