Jeff Arend did something exactly the way his boss, Del Worsham, did it this weekend. He tied another driver in E.T., but got the better spot on the grid on the basis of speed. For Worsham, the difference was the No. 1 spot, but for Arend it was even more critical, as he and Scott Kalitta both ended qualifying with a best of 4.904 on the board. Arend got the final spot in the field on the basis of his 309.70 mph mark, which bettered Kalitta's 294.24 clocking.
As the the 16th name on the ladder, Arend will face Worsham in round one tomorrow.
"It could have easily worked out a number of different ways here, including the fact Kalitta could have run a thousandth of a second quicker and we'd be on the sidelines tomorrow," Arend said. "As it is, we have both Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Impalas in the show, but we have to run each other in the first round. At least we know one CSK Chevy will be going on to at least the second round, and if Del gets the better of us, you can bet your life our entire team will over there helping them out to see if we can't all bring home a win for him this weekend.
"We were bugged with some dropped-cylinder issues here, and we had a hard time getting to the other end under full power. I'm sure the guys will analyze everything and we'll give it our best. That's our job, and that's what we'll do tomorrow."
