CLERMONT, Ind. -- Running a track record speed, a 206.23 mph, Greg Anderson drove his KB Racing LLC-owned, Summit Racing Equipment-backed Pontiac GTO to the No. 1 spot after three of five qualifying sessions.
Anderson's elapsed time, a 6.681 seconds pass, was also a track record.
"We know what we've got," said Anderson. "We came up here and tested a couple of weeks ago, so we think we've got a decent handle on the racetrack. To be honest with you, I expected the track to be a little different when we came back for the race, but it's proving not to be that different. Obviously the test was a good idea.
"We had a little bit of bad luck with the starter going away the second round, but at Indy you've got five chances at it, and it looks like the weather's going to be great all weekend, so no sense to panic. Hopefully we've got our bad luck out of the way and now we can set sail and show what these Summit Racing Pontiacs can do.
"We definitely didn't get it all with either car, so we know there's a lot left, and I'm sure there is in other cars too. But it's always a good feeling to know when you got out and make a good run that there's still a lot left in the car."
Anderson has won the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals four times, including the last three years consecutively, in five final rounds. Only Pro Stock legend Bob Glidden and Warren Johnson have more U.S. National wins than Anderson. Glidden has nine and WJ has six.
Should Anderson find the O'Reilly Raceway Park (ORP) in Indianapolis Winner's Circle this year, he will become only the third Pro Stock driver to have four consecutive wins at the most sought-after single event title in drag racing today. Glidden accomplished the feat from 1985-1988 and Warren Johnson duplicated Glidden's effort from 1992-1995. Only time will tell if Anderson is the first driver to reach four in the new Millennium.
At the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Anderson advanced to his first final round in 1999 before losing to his former boss and mentor, Warren Johnson. Two years later in 2001, Anderson once again advanced to the final round. This time he took home his first U.S. Nationals trophy with a final-round win over Mark Osborne. Then he got on a roll. In 2003, Anderson won the first of his three consecutive U.S. Nationals titles with a final-round victory over Kurt Johnson, repeating the feat in 2004 when he defeated Kenny Koretsky and then he got the best of Richie Stevens in 2005. In addition to his four wins at O'Reilly Raceway Park, Anderson has been No. 1 qualifier at the "Big Go" twice (2004-05), and his KB Racing LLC/Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GTO.
With six races to go in the battle for the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock point championship this year, including this weekend's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Anderson's teammate Jason Line holds the top spot in the standings and leads Anderson, who holds the No. 2 spot, by 121 points and third place Dave Connolly by 171 points. Kurt Johnson is fourth, 277 points back and Jim Yates rounds out the top five in fifth, 317 points behind the leader.
Qualifying for Anderson and his KB Racing LLC-owned, Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GTO concludes with two additional Pro Stock sessions tomorrow (Sunday) at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Anderson then begins his quest for the Top Fuel title at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals on Monday, Sept. 4, with eliminations for all classes beginning at 11 a.m. All times are local Indianapolis time (ET) and subject to change at anytime.

Anderson has won three consecutive POWERade Pro Stock Championships (2003-2005). Line finished third in the 2005 POWERade point standings and was honored with the 2004 Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future award, presented to the most outstanding rookie in a professional category. This year KB Racing LLC also began fielding a Top Fuel Dragster, managed by Kalitta Motorsports, with rookie Top Fuel driver Hillary Will handling the driving duties.
