JOLIET, Ill. (June 2) – Five times in the last 24 years, Sherman Adcock has earned the right to compete in the prestigious JEGS Allstars competition and each time, the Columbus, Ga., racer has come up short of his ultimate goal of reaching the winner’s circle. Adcock, a two-time NHRA world champion, will be back for his sixth attempt at JEGS Allstar glory when the special event kicks off at Route 66 Raceway on June 7, during the Torco Race Fuels NHRA Nationals. Adcock will be one of eight competitors in the Super Comp category who will be vying for the $4,500 top prize.
The JEGS Allstars is a special event that is open only to the best sportsman racers from each of NHRA’s seven geographic divisions, based on a year-long points battle. In addition to the individual championships in eight eliminators, Allstars competitors will also be competing for the $20,000 bonus that is awarded to the overall team champions. Adcock, who represents the Southeast Division (Division 2), was part of the winning team in 1991. He also qualified for the prestigious event in 1986, 1995, 2002, and 2007.
In order to put an end his long JEGS Allstars dry spell, Adcock will have to outlast a very deep and talented field that includes Ron Erks, of Clinton, Ohio, who is not only a former NHRA national champion, but is also the defending JEGS Allstars winner. Erks will be participating in the JEGS Allstars for the fourth-straight year. In addition to his win in 2007, he also has a runner-up finish to his credit in 2005.
Also in the mix will be Division 3 representative Mike Fuqua, whose impressive résumé lacks only an Allstars victory to be considered complete. Fuqua, who is the co-promoter of the successful JEGS U.S. Open E.T. Bracket Championships at O’Reilly Raceway Park, will be making his first Allstars appearance but he won’t be alone as Jack Sepanek (Division 1), Lloyd Parfait (Division 4), David Harrington (Division 5), Andy Morris (Division 6) and Justin Jeffrey (Division 7) are also first-time Allstars.
As an added bonus, any driver who wins Saturday’s JEGS Allstars crown will also have the opportunity to earn the JEGS double-up bonus by claiming a victory in the same eliminator during Sunday’s final eliminations at the Torco Route 66 Nationals.
