LAS VEGAS - Many seek the perfect combination of numbers when making the trip to Las Vegas but for Troy Critchley and AMS Staff Leasing team they have been playing the numbers right a lot lately. And their perfect combination is? Howard Moon brings the right numbers to the table and headed into Las Vegas that makes for perfect timing.
Moon long known for his prowess in tuning the Dr. Moon's Rage entry became an instant asset for the Dave Wood AMS Team when they merged earlier this season.
"When I first started racing I always heard the name Howard Moon and [Former TAFC Champion] Von Smith would brag on him at the championship banquets," Critchley said. "They won championship after championship and because of that Howard was already a legend before I started racing in the United States . He's even more of one now."
Moon, of Clinton , Tennessee , has plenty of experience working with fast cars dating back to his childhood when he began tinkering on his dad's car. He graduated to a fuel altered just to keep busy and to learn about the science of making engines work to their maximum potential. Eventually the challenge of making engines run quicker and faster won out over driving.
That's why he and Critchley have hit it off so well.
Critchley loves nothing more than driving and Moon loves nothing more than making his driver go quicker.
"I've been doing this for such a long time that it just seems like the right thing to do," Moon added.
Not only has Moon tuned Critchley to plenty of round wins, he crowning achievement has been in directing a final round finish in Dallas but a 239-mile per hour blast in Indianapolis. The one common response Moon gave during those milestone performances was a trademark smile and a subtle fist pump.
That's the Moon way. Walk tall and carry a big stick.
"Howard is about the calmest person I have ever worked with," Critchley said. "He's the best. You get caught up in things whether it is building engines or tuning, but not him. He maintains a level head at all time and that works as a positive for the team. That kind of leadership goes a long way.
"Some jump around drawing straws on the tune-up. Not Howard:he knows what he wants and makes it happen. His records are kept in excellent order and most of those are in his head."
A VEGAS PRO MODIFIED COMBINATION;
Horsepower by Critchley and Tune by Moon
