Friday, 17 August 2007 - (Sydney, NSW) If there is one competitor of whom best represents the essence of the upcoming ACDelco East Coast Nationals on Friday, August 31 and Saturday September 1 at Western Sydney International Dragway - it has to be Wild West Aussie Doorslammer star, John Zappia!
With a massive entry list of 20 Top Doorslammers - the fastest sedan appearing vehicles in the world - Zappia has made this event his very own as back-to-back and defending Champion.
Of course, it was his world's first official sub-6 second blast in an epic final against Gary Phillips at the 2005 ACDelco sponsored event that everyone will remember for many, many years to come in the sport.
In fact, you can click HERE to watch Zappia and his awesome 5.967 pass via YouTube!
In sobering news for his rivals at the season opener, Zappia is quietly confident of a three-peat, with as strong a racing package as he has enjoyed in his decorated Drag Racing career.
"We are very busy getting things together, with a new paint scheme to be shown in Sydney," grinned Zappia with obvious enthusiasm!
John Zappia's team has now developed to such a point that he now works full time on the racing side of things and that includes extension of the team in several areas.
"We start work on a brand new car here in WA next week, for my new team mate Craig Pedley and I am real excited about that."
Pedley is the man behind Striker Crushing and Screening, Zappia's primary Sponsor and it's obviously already been a beautiful relationship!
"Craig has been awesome, I am more than happy to continue on in my current Monaro car, however he has made it clear that if the new car shows more potential that he will drive initially, he has basically insisted that I get the best package and that is just a perfect way to show what sort of guy he is."
Despite the new pipe being moulded into yet another potent Zappia creation, it's fair to say the existing and distinctive 1971 Monaro is getting a fair revamp as well. One big change is the permanent removal of the distinctive Whipple Supercharger and a subsequent switch to a lighter PSI combination.
"We are going to the PSI Supercharger for the season, because parts availability is a little better for us. In fact we have a nice spares inventory full stop for the season, probably as good as I have ever had in my career. Rentco have also renewed their relationship with us and that was awesome news."
Finishing a narrow second in the ANDRA Australia Top Doorslammer Championship to Phillips still chides the West Aussie Drag Racing Icon!
"I think we had Gary's measure at the Winternationals but the rainout probably cost us a championship there in the end. We have been second and a close second in the Championship these past two seasons, so there is only one direction from here and a hat trick at the ACDelco East Coast Nationals will be the perfect start.
With expected cool and dry conditions at the upcoming ACDelco East Coast extravaganza, only the foolish would underestimate the Striker/Rentco rocketship!
