Center Line, Mich. — Mopar® and HEMI® engine fans will feel like they have hit the jackpot in Las Vegas this weekend. The first 2007 HEMI Challenge race series will take place at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 31. The HEMI challenge race series runs in conjunction with the 5th Annual Mopars at the Strip event on March 30 – 31.
The Las Vegas stop is new to the ever-growing HEMI Challenge race series, which features competitors from the NHRA Super Stock/A-HEMI (SS/AH)division. The head-to-head Mopar match ups are guaranteed to fill the Las Vegas desert with roars from HEMI engines and cheers from the crowd.
HEMI Challenge Race Series
The HEMI Challenge has expanded from a single event into a series of races throughout the year. HEMI-powered 1968 Plymouth Barracudas and 1968 Dodge Darts do battle during the HEMI Challenge season. The series champion will be crowned at the U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis on Aug. 29–Sept. 3. Last year’s champion, Charlie Westcott Jr., received the $10,000 bonus from Mopar for taking home the HEMI Challenge U.S. Nationals win. Westcott piloted his 1968 Plymouth Barracuda through a formidable field of 25 SS/AH drivers. The stiff competition has powered the expansion of the HEMI Challenge series.
“The program just keeps on growing,” said Jon Clark, Mopar Performance’s Department Manager. “The grassroots racers and enthusiasts who compete in the HEMI Challenge have really tuned in to the expansion of this authentic event. Mopar is proud to add Mopars at The Strip as a stop on the 2007 HEMI Challenge race series schedule. The legendary HEMI-powered machines that compete in the HEMI Challenge series will fit in perfectly with the muscle cars, street machines and tuner vehicles that make Mopars at The Strip the best all-Chrysler drag racing event on the West Coast.”
The 2007 HEMI Challenge race series will visit six cities. Following Mopars at The Strip, the HEMI Challenge race series will travel to Belle Rose, La., for the Jeg’s NHRA Cajun Sportsnationals on April 20–22.
5th Annual Mopars at The Strip
The two-day Mopars at the Strip event kicks off Thursday, March 29, when caravans of Mopar muscle cars will leave for Las Vegas. The “Cruise to the Strip” starts at various locations including Salt Lake City, Grand Junction, Colo., Glendora, Calif. and Phoenix. The caravans converge in Las Vegas at 7 p.m. Thursday night at the Cannery Hotel & Casino.

70 Years of Mopar
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.
Originally used in the 1920s, Mopar (a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It was also widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s – the muscle car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth “package cars” equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of “Special Parts” for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.
Today, the Chrysler Group’s Global Service & Parts division is responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of nearly 250,000 authentic Mopar replacement parts, components and accessories for Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge vehicles sold around the world. To assure quality, reliability and durability, all Mopar parts and accessories are designed in strict adherence to DaimlerChrysler engineering standards.
