I figured this might be a little neat to reflect from 31 years ago to where we are today.

21 for this year isn`t bad.And there might be a few more.just think of Pat Dakin ,he is the onty one there 31 years later.

I was there, as well as for the 50th. Plus, I'll be there this weekend.
Check out NHRA's site for their account of the '79 race. They said 60+ top fuel cars were entered and Big Daddy made a "tire smoking" 160 mph run in Swamp Rat 1.
That's weird because I have a picture of Big making that pass and there's not a bit of tire smoke anywhere.

Doesn't Conrad count???

I mean, he's right in the thick of it years later. Not driving maybe, but heavily involved.

That event was my buddy Greggo's first trip to Mecca. At the tender age of 12. I think it woulda been awesome to see that kind of show with that many fuel cars. From what he told me, at that time, there were no set times for qualifying in the pro classes. You might be in walking in the pits, and suddenly you'd hear a fuel car up on the line and it was a mad dash to the stands.

That car needs to get out of the sticky part of the lane to do the tire smoking runs. Big did that full pass tire smoker at E-town a decade or so ago, he was just a few feet from the wall start to finish. The tracks are just to sticky today for that car.

Was there with my then 12 year old son -AMTRACK from SoCal to Indy.

Sad note to the event was the errant blower that sailed off a car on to a TV photograper's stand , killing him.

We're in the stands either Sat or Sun when a young lady, who I'd described as a bit of a "floosie", came up asking ANYONE if she knew how to get to the pit of "ACE" somebody.

Funny how stuff sticks in your mind.

(Oh, and there were the fans yelling "Show your t##s to well endowed ladies that walked by).

I think my 12 year old kinda liked that!

yes no sessions in those days, At Englishtown I learned to keep my eyes peeled for a car with a blower in front of a push truck on top end of the fire up road

Yeah, I agree, and for that matter, Mark Oswald was ALSO entered and driving a Top Fuel car that year too, and he's still involved and will be at this years race too. So, if you only count drivers, then Pat Dakin "is" the only one still driving this year and back then (wonder where the Greek was?).

Well for what its worth 1980 TF Winner Terry Capp ran Ron Hodgson's Nostagia AA/FC last year. Not sure that he drove at all this year though.
