Notes of Interest

• The DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals presented by POWEREDGE at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway marks the culmination of the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series’ two-week long Western Swing. The previous event of the Western Swing was the NHRA Northwest Nationals July 18-20 at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington. The DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals is the 12th event on the NHRA’s 20-race calendar.

• Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) will be represented in Top Fuel by Tony Stewart and in Funny Car by 53-time Funny Car winner and four-time champion Matt Hagan. Hagan is coming off of a win at the Muckleshoot Casino Resort NHRA Northwest Nationals. It marked his first win of the 2025 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

• Stewart and Hagan come into Sonoma representing Mobil 1 and Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage, respectively. Stewart’s Top Fuel dragster carries the colors of Mobil 1, the world’s leading synthetic motor oil brand. Meanwhile, Hagan’s Dodge//SRT Hellcat Funny Car is emblazoned with Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage (JHG). JHG was formed in 2021 and brings a passion and flare to the automotive world. They aim to inspire, drive and celebrate progress. JHG spans across Jason Johnson’s car collection featuring more than 200 sought after vehicles from classics, to hot rods and supercars. Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage’s mission is to preserve and showcase the automotive industry. The vehicles are driven to and displayed at events by Johnson and his team with the goal of growing interest and keeping car culture thriving. Johnson’s history in the industry began with Mather Auto Dismantler, Mather Mini Trucks and U-Pull It in Northern California. He later held an instrumental role in the growth and success of Copart, Inc., a global provider of online vehicle auction and remarketing services. JHG also serves as a primary sponsor of Elite Motorsports in the NHRA Pro Stock series.

• Coming into Sonoma, Stewart is second in the Top Fuel championship standings, 12 points behind leader Shawn Langdon. Hagan is third in the Funny Car standings, 166 points behind leader Austin Prock.

• The DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals will serve as Stewart’s 32nd career Top Fuel start and his second at Sonoma. For Hagan, this will be his 364th career Funny Car start and his 16th at Sonoma.

• Stewart is eyeing his first victory in the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals, as well as his first No. 1 qualifier at the event. In 2024, Stewart secured the No. 11 qualifying position and advanced to the Finals during eliminations on Sunday, where his 3.774 ET at 321.73 mph lost to Antron Brown’s 3.746 ET at 329.67 mph. It marked his first appearance in a Top Ful final round. Stewart’s wife Leah Pruett has two No. 1 qualifiers at the event, which came in 2017 (3.669 ET at 328.38 mph – set a new track record for the 1,000-foot long dragstrip) and 2022 (3.689 ET at 327.59 mph).

• Stewart made 18 starts on the Sonoma Raceway road course while in NASCAR. He’s a three-time winner there (2001, 2005 and 2016), with his last career NASCAR Cup Series win coming at Sonoma. His victory in 2016 was his 49th and final NASCAR Cup Series victory as Stewart retired from NASCAR racing at the conclusion of the season. He’s looking to become the first driver to conquer both the Sonoma road course and the drag strip.

• Hagan is also seeking his first victory in the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals. He has advanced to the finals three times – 2012 (5.462 ET at 146.67 mph, lost to Johnny Gray: 4.142 ET at 305.15 mph), 2019 (4.030 ET at 316.60 mph, lost to Robert Hight: 3.973 ET at 325.45 mph) and 2021 (3.991 ET at 324.44 mph, lost to Hight: 3.871 ET at 322.50 mph). Hagan has two No. 1 qualifiers at the event, which came in 2009 (4.068 ET at 307.51 mph) and 2013 (3.986 ET at 320.51 mph). Hagan qualified No. 1 for the first time in his pro career at the 2009 DENSO Nationals.

• Sonoma is one of only two races in the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series in which Hagan has not hoisted the trophy although he has appearance in three finals. The only other race he has not won is the Virginia Nationals in Richmond, an event in which he has raced just six times compared to 15 times at Sonoma.

• By advancing to the Semifinals at the Muckleshoot Casino Resort NHRA Northwest Nationals, Hagan qualified to participate in the #2Fast2Tasty Challenge at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals, where he will face Alexis DeJoria.

• Hagan will participate in the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge autograph session on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. PDT, which will take place at the Mission Foods tent in the midway.

• Hagan and Stewart will participate in a Heatwave Visual autograph session on Saturday from 9:30-10:00 a.m. PDT, which will take place at their display in the midway.

• On Friday at Sonoma, Leah Pruett will present the Juggers Annual Scholarship to Alyssa Eddy. The award was established to encourage and reward high school students who race at Sonoma Raceway instead of on the street, and to help them achieve their goals both on the track and in their high school education. Eddy stands out as a high-achieving student and exemplary young racer with the integrity and discipline that Juggers Racing Team values. A proud graduate of Vacaville High School, she earned a 4.04 GPA in honors courses, led FFA projects, and mentored youth in soccer—all while cultivating a love for drag racing and building a foundation for her career in emergency medicine. Focused, compassionate, and ready to serve, Alyssa exemplifies the poise and clarity that define high school drag racers. Her journey from the strip to the ER reflects the very best of what racing can teach: purpose, timing, and heart.

• Hagan and Stewart will be available to speak with the media on Friday at 4:15 p.m. PDT in the Sonoma Raceway Media Center.

• Sonoma marks a home race for Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage, with Jason Johnson originally from the Vacaville, California area, just 35 miles from Sonoma Raceway.

Tony Stewart, Driver of the Mobil 1 Dodge//SRT Top Fuel Dragster

Sonoma marks your first race this season representing Mobil 1 and you’ll also be debuting a new scheme for them. Talk about how much their partnership means, having been with the brand for 14 years.
“Everyone at Mobil 1 has been family for the last 14 years. We’ve had such a great partnership with our NASCAR program, World of Outlaws program, and now our NHRA program. It’s just a labor of love with our partnership. We continuously work hard to try to figure out how to help Mobil 1 continue to push the boundaries and make their product better. The great thing for us as a professional race team is we don’t worry about our lubricant in our car. We don’t worry about whether we’re getting the protection we need and the lubrication we need. Mobil 1 has always given us quality products to keep us on the front edge of technology and it helps us take better care of our parts and pieces with our motors and rear ends and everything that we use their products on. It’s just one of those partnerships that helps your program go faster and they know how to protect us at the same time.”

Earlier this season, you became the only driver to win on every property at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. You also became the only person to complete the trifecta at Chicago – the oval track, dirt track (as a team owner) and dragstrip. Looking ahead to Sonoma, you made 18 starts on the Sonoma Raceway road course while in NASCAR and collected three wins, including your last career NASCAR Cup Series win in 2016. You’re looking to become the first driver to conquer both the Sonoma road course and the drag strip. How special would that feat be to add another track to this season’s list of accomplishments?
“We’ve kind of been in a unique situation the last couple years of going to facilities that have multiple tracks. Las Vegas was the first one that we were able to conquer all the tracks on that property and obviously Sonoma is one of my favorite NASCAR tracks on the schedule. Having the opportunity to win there in the Cup car and now having an opportunity to win on the drag strip would be really cool for us to be able to knock a win down. It’s always been one of my favorite places to come race and I just love coming to Sonoma. Hopefully we can celebrate on Sunday in a little different victory lane celebration and different location on the racetrack, but at the same time, still get that feeling of what it’s like to conquer at Sonoma.”

Matt Hagan, Driver of the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Dodge//SRT Hellcat Funny Car

After having a couple weeks off prior to Seattle, what benefit will it be having back-to-back races while on the Western Swing and coming off of a win in Seattle?
“Sonoma has always been a tricky track for us. Mike Knudsen (crew chief) is really coming into his own the last couple races. We have a great opportunity to keep this momentum going. It would be great to get the wine goblin at the end of the weekend. We just have to keep pushing and digging and I need to have good lights and we’ll end up being where we need to be. It seems like (Ron) Capps wins a lot at Sonoma, so it would be great to be able to get one. I love racing him and our history goes way back. He’s heads up and we race hard. We had a super close race against him in Seattle in the Final. There’s a lot of great competition out there, so we’ll keep pushing hard.”

Sonoma marks the home race for Jason Johnson and Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage. How special would it be to earn your first win at Sonoma and bring home the Wally in wine country?
“I definitely want to get a win for JHG (Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage). They got their first win with us in Dallas and we want to keep performing well for them. Jason (Johnson) just added a section to his new dealership for championship trophies, so we need to keep adding to that collection. It will be a big event for them.”
