Despite record-breaking heat in the Arizona desert with temperatures over 100 degrees, the Team Kalitta Saturday success picked up where it left off last season. Shawn Langdon took the No. 1 qualifier, and Doug Kalitta and J.R. Todd captured a double win in the first Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge of the season, a rematch of the semifinals and finals at the previous event. The FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals is set for tomorrow; the race broadcast is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. eastern time Sunday, March 22 on FSI.
Langdon was the class of Top Fuel today claiming the No. 1 qualifier with the quickest run of the weekend during the Saturday morning qualifying session. His 3.783-second run at 331.36 mph moved him to the No. 1 spot. It was his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and the 23rd of his career.
“Obviously, the track is a little tricky out there, but we were happy to make three good runs,” Langdon said. “Like I’ve always said, if you surround yourself with good people, you can do good things. I’ve got a great group behind me. Brian (Crew Chief Brian Husen) has been doing a fantastic job, and all the Kalitta Air Careers guys have been doing a great job putting the car together. My confidence is as high as it’s ever been inside a race car. We knew the conditions this morning were the best they’d be and that there was a chance to go No. 1.”
