NO MORE ‘STEVE WHO?’ AT ATLANTA
Point Leader Seeks Second Straight Win, Third Overall in Southern Nationals
ATLANTA, Ga. – When Steve Torrence upended eight-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher to win the 2012 Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway, he was a relative unknown in professional drag racing, a young Texan who in 54 previous appearances in the NHRA Mello Yello Series never before had raced in a final round.
When qualifying begins in this week’s 38th renewal of the southern classic, he won’t enjoy the luxury of such anonymity.
Little more than six years after forming his own team with the seemingly audacious goal of winning the Mello Yello Championship, Torrence has become the most celebrated driver in the world’s most extreme motorsport.
He returns to Atlanta Dragway not only as the defending event champion (after beating Schumacher in last year’s final round) but as the Top Fuel point leader and the favorite to win a championship that just eluded him the...
With Wally in tow, Cruz Pedregon and team are ready for another win as they head to Atlanta this weekend. "We are still riding high and know we've got the car, crew, fans and sponsor to make it happen again," said Pedregon. “As the driver, I'm really motivated, and it feels good to be backed by talented people and a really great car.”
Crew Chief Aaron Brooks says, "This team puts in long hours to make sure the Snap-on Toyota is running at its peak for Cruz, and the win gives us all a lot of confidence as we move forward in this very promising season. We're all now channeling our 'win' energy for a fast weekend ahead in Atlanta.”
Atlanta Dragway is a track favorite of Cruz's, even with the potential for changing weather throughout the weekend. Cruz and the rest of the team are prepared for whatever Mother Nature may present and are encouraging fans to come out to the track or watch FOX Sports to take in the excitement of the NHRA Southern Nationals. On the side of Cruz's car this...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On a day when Tony Schumacher, Antron Brown, Leah Pritchett and Brittany Force all were spectators after the first round, Texan Steve Torrence ignored the distractions, retained his focus and drove the Capco Contractors Top Fuel dragster to an historic victory in the ninth annual NGK Spark Plugs 4Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway.
It was the third consecutive four-wide victory for the 35-year-old cancer survivor, his second straight at zMAX and his second in three weeks. He won the inaugural Denso 4Wide at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on April 8. The Charlotte and Las Vegas tracks, both built by Bruton Smith’s Speedway Motorsports, Inc., are the only two that can accommodate four cars at a time.
After posting quick time of eliminations (3.709 seconds at 331.53 miles per hour) in easily winning his opening quad, Torrence got a scare in the second round when his 10,000 horsepower hybrid starting spinning the tires downtrack after opening up an early...

TORRENCE DEFENDS AT CHARLOTTE
Texan Goes After Third Straight Four-Wide Win in NHRA Mello Yello Series
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Although he’s still not a big fan of four-wide drag racing, Steve Torrence admits to having achieved a level of comfort in the novelty format that makes him and his Capco Contractors Top Fuel dragster the combination to beat this week in the ninth annual NGK Spark Plugs 4Wide at Bruton Smith’s zMAX Dragway.
“Richard Hogan is really good at adapting to track conditions, whether it’s two lanes or four,” Torrence said of the crew chief who has directed him to third and second place finishes in Mello Yello points the last two years. “In four wide racing, the driver is the one who has to make the big adjustments.
“You have to stay focused. It takes a lot more concentration (to go four-wide) because it is so different from what we do at most of the other races,” Torrence said. “I’m finally comfortable with the driving and staging procedures which were pretty...
Laris Wins and Runner-Up’s at Lucas Oil Dallas Divisional
(4-16-2018) Raceland, LA – Winning one NHRA class is difficult, winning two, places you in a small group, Ross Laris won Top Dragster and Runner-Up in Super Comp, which means he came close to placing his name in the “Double” club. Laris the defending Division Top Dragster Champion, winning this weekend helps as Laris is sitting in 3rd place after the event. The season still has plenty of time for Laris to climb back to the top, to defend the title.
“It was a roller coaster weekend, out first round in (Top Dragster) in the 1st Race, win the 2nd Race in Top Dragster, 3rd round loss in Super Comp in the 1st Race and Runner-Up in the 2nd Race,” Ross Laris, President of Laris Insurance, stated. “I think all the Divisional Races should be Doubles!”, laughed Laris.
Ross is currently holding down the number 2 spot in the South Central Division SC hunt, he is currently chasing Steve Collier, who Laris lost to this past weekend in...
Capco Contractors Driver Retains Point Lead Despite Early Exit at Houston
HOUSTON, Texas – Steve Torrence remained winless in his home state Sunday after dropping a narrow decision to No. 1 qualifier and track record-holder Leah Pritchett in the second round of the 31st annual NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway.
Winner of 11 of the previous 30 Mello Yello tour events and of 18 overall, the Kilgore resident had hoped to finally break through Sunday at one of the two Texas tracks he calls home, especially after runner-up finishes at Royal Purple each of the last two seasons.
Instead, he’ll have to wait until fall when the tour moves to the Texas Motorplex outside Dallas for another opportunity.
Despite the loss, the just-turned-35-year old cancer survivor managed to retain a share of the point lead in his latest bid for the $500,000 Mello Yello Top Fuel Championship.
When the tour moves to Charlotte, N.C., this week for the ninth annual NGK 4Wide...
